The 23rd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards held many surprise wins on the road to the Academy Awards, with Hidden Figures taking the big award of the night for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. The film earned an Oscar nomination for Best Picture this past week, and tonight's win further cements its chances as a major contender in the awards race.

The night was dominated by extremely passionate, political speeches concerning the state of America, a topic on everyone's minds at this current time. Expected wins went to Viola Davis for Fences and Mahershala Ali for Moonlight, though it was somewhat a surprise to see Denzel Washington pick up Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for Fences over Casey Affleck in Manchester by the Sea, and Emma Stone win Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for La La Land - as both are highly contested categories at this point in time.
